I chose teaching because I believe education is a tool for liberation. Schools can reinforce systems of oppression or challenge them. They can tell students of color they are deficient or that they are brilliant. As a teacher I use my position intentionally. I teach my students to think critically about power systems. I teach them they are not problems to be fixed but people with unique gifts. I teach them their communities have resilience and wisdom. I teach them they can change the world. Education gave me tools to understand injustice and fight it. I want to give those same tools to my students.
