For the first part of my career success was measured by external metrics: money made title held and prestige acquired. I optimized for these things because that is what I was taught. But success measured only by external metrics is a hamster wheel. You never arrive. You never feel satisfied. A few years ago I started asking different questions: Am I making a difference? Do I have respect? Do I have flexibility? Do my values align? These questions led me to impact investing. I make less money than in finance. But I wake up excited. I go to bed feeling like I contributed something meaningful. My success now is measured by impact not accumulation.
