Growing up I learned what masculinity meant: do not cry do not be vulnerable do not show weakness. You provide financially and handle conflict with strength. These lessons were a trap. When I became a father I realized I could not pass those lessons to my son. So I started redefining masculinity for myself. I go to therapy. I cry. I ask for help. I express affection. I am vulnerable with my wife and children. I talk about my fears and insecurities. I am teaching my children that these qualities are strength not weakness. I am teaching them that real men have the courage to be fully human. Redefining masculinity has made me a better father husband and man.
