Growing up in Lagos I was surrounded by stories. My grandmother was a storyteller. But in school we learned different stories. We learned that Africa was primitive that our culture was backwards. This created a rupture in me. I was learning to hate the culture I loved. At twenty I made a decision: I would dedicate my life to reclaiming our narratives. I started a platform to amplify African storytellers. I created spaces where African stories could be told by Africans not filtered through colonial lenses. I trained young people to become storytellers. This work is reclamation. This work is resistance.
