For a long time I was ashamed of being Mexican. I wanted to assimilate. I thought that is what was required to succeed. But as an organizer I realized something: my culture is a source of power not shame. My abuela recipes are resistance. My indigenous heritage is power. My Spanish language is power. My culture carries wisdom about community about collective survival. Now I reclaim my culture intentionally. I speak Spanish. I cook with my mother. I celebrate my heritage. I teach my children to be proud. In a society that tells brown people to disappear this is a revolutionary act.
