For three years I lived in darkness. I woke up not wanting to wake. I went through motions while feeling nothing inside. I told no one because I was supposed to be strong. But depression does not care about strength. It is a disease that steals your life. I finally reached out when my son deserved a father who was emotionally available. I started therapy tried medication and joined a support group. I learned that vulnerability is the deepest form of strength. Depression is a liar. It took time but slowly the darkness lifted. I could laugh without it feeling hollow. I could be present without despair crushing me. Now I talk openly about mental health because if my story helps even one person reach out then all that suffering was not for nothing.
