I grew up in Brazil surrounded by the Amazon rainforest. I watched it shrink throughout my childhood. I felt helpless and angry. But at sixteen I decided that helplessness would not be my response. I would dedicate my life to protecting what I loved. I studied environmental science. I joined organizations fighting for forest protection. I participated in direct action to block illegal logging. I have been arrested. I have been threatened. But I cannot give up. The Amazon is not just a forest. It is the lungs of our planet. It is the home of indigenous peoples who have protected it for thousands of years. Every day more burns. I fight because the alternative is unconscionable. I fight because I believe another world is possible. I fight for my children and all generations to come.
