My childhood was defined by conflict. I was born in Somalia during civil war. By age eight I was a refugee in Kenya. I watched my country burn. I watched families destroyed. I watched neighbors become enemies. I lived in a refugee camp for five years. Those years shaped everything about who I am. I learned resilience. I learned that humans have incredible capacity to endure. But I also learned that cycles of violence can be broken. I learned that people can choose healing. I learned that peace is possible. Now I work as a conflict resolution specialist. I teach nonviolence. I work with communities to build peace.
