When my son was born I made a decision: I would be an active present and engaged father. I knew my presence mattered beyond my family. I was teaching my son what a man could be. I was disrupting a stereotype. I changed diapers attended every school event talked about feelings and was affectionate. People were often surprised. Their surprise revealed how deep stereotypes ran. Fatherhood taught me patience and vulnerability. It taught me that the most important work I do is at home raising children who will see the world differently. I am teaching my children to question injustice stand up for what is right and treat all people with dignity. I am teaching them that masculinity is about taking care of family and community.
