I spent years trying to fit into spaces not designed for me. I tried to talk like them dress like them think like them. I thought that is what success looked like. But that strategy left me exhausted and empty. I realized that trying to fit in was a form of self-abandonment. At a certain point I decided to stop shrinking myself. I started speaking up in meetings. I challenged racist statements and behaviors. I supported other Black people. I celebrated my culture openly. Some people did not like my authentic self. Those people left my life. But the people who mattered? They valued me more. They respected me more. I became more effective precisely because I stopped trying to be anyone other than myself.
