I came to activism late. I was naive. I thought that caring deeply was enough. I thought that good intentions were enough. I thought that telling people about environmental destruction would move them to action. I was wrong. I learned that activism is a skill that must be practiced and refined. I learned that anger without strategy is just noise. I learned that coalition-building is more powerful than individual heroics. I learned that progress is slow and often invisible. I learned that showing up day after day for causes that do not generate media coverage is a form of love. I learned that working with people different from me made me stronger. Over the years my activism has become more sophisticated more effective more rooted in community. I have learned that this is a marathon not a sprint.
